Lately, I’ve been paying a lot of attention to HR 3101 , which was introduced into the House at the end of June by Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA.) Full text of the bill can be read here . This bill is aimed at providing accessibility to people with various disabilities. I only know what it’s like to be deaf, and not blind or autistic, so I can only tell my own story of why I support HR 3101. I remember when closed captions first became available on television.

Tomorrow morning beginning at 6am, EST, Turner Classic Movies will spotlight Oscar-winner and cinematic trailblazer Sidney Poitier with a day of his best films in their “Summer Under the Stars” series. Check out the re-imagined poster for “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.” To understand Poitier’s cinematic contribution is to almost imagine movie apartheid. Before 1950, the only time you saw Black men on screen, they were usually featured in menial roles (butler, laborer, etc . . .

We have now been living displaced for 26 days, in this same small hotel room for 20 of those 26 days. It’s an Extended Stay “Deluxe”, which offers a kitchenette with a microwave, stove, oven and fridge. These things have made living here just a tad bit easier to deal with since we can make eggs and pizza and other somewhat home-y things to eat instead of fast food. However, the room remains a small, cooped up space which offers us no privacy from each other and as such, tension can get a bit

The first time I watched THE DESCENT, I was at home alone. But this was no dark and stormy night, it was a sunny Saturday afternoon. It still scared the bejezus out of me. The first DESCENT was a big hit, particularly for a foreign indie horror film. It was different enough than other horror flicks out at the time that it garnered quite a bit of attention, and won a slew of awards, so of course we’re getting a sequel! Here’s the first look at the one-sheet for THE DESCENT: PART 2.

As far back as 1770 the first tourist accommodation was opened up in Chamonix. Prior to this Chamonix Mont Blanc embodied a savage and craggy rural village where the people captured their animals and grew their wheat. Chalets back then were used to breed dairy cows over the spring and summer. The cows milk was kept by transforming it into cheese and butter and stocked in the village for consumption over the difficult winter times. During the winter the barns were locked up, and any valuables were put safely in a tiny hut.

We made it back from New York on Monday and I’ve been very happy puttering about the house and neighborhood for the last couple days, getting myself back on track on the home front. New York leaves me with conflicted feelings. I love that we got to see all the good friends and family there and eat good food. We wolfed down the food, flavors and ingredients we cannot find in Guadalajara – corned beef and pastrami sandwiches from Katz deli, herring from Russ & Daughters, hole-in-the-wall dim sum in Chinatown, Pakistani food and NY style pizza.

Several inquiring minds have asked about my favorite items received off our registry and, while this may seem like a post more suited for the EAD Weddings, I decided to run with it over here in hopes that ya’ll like sneak-peeks into other folks’ homes just as much as I do! Warning: I’m skipping over the items that I would guess 95% of American brides register for – we all know we love our colorful Kitchenaid mixers and our china pattern (if we went that route), and I would bet that most couples get great use out of their Calphalon / Le Creuset / All-Clad, etc.

We decided to make a holiday of dropping A off at his college where he begins a new chapter in his life. I put in extra hours at work, squeezed in that second visit to Calcutta, (and stayed away from the blog!) and we were all set. But let me start at the very beginning… because there is food there as well… We started for the airport giving ourselves ample time having learnt our lesson just last month when TH and son nearly didn’t make it to the flight on the day they were to report for admissions! What can I say, we are a very laid-back family! Yet, I didn’t make time for packing some lunch.

Fat Louie was getting old. He was a fat white duck, and he was suffering with the gout. He had contracted the gout as a result of eating rich human foods thrown into the lake at Snapfinger Woods Estates, a complex east of Atlanta. Snapfinger lake was man made, as an amenity for the residents of the condominium complex. Louie had been top duck when he was younger. His flock consisted of 12 adult ducks in the spring, usually expanding to 17 or 18 by fall.

Last night Terry warned…er…informed (reminded?) me that, well, That Time Was Nigh, and gave me a pack of oreos. He knows me well. Oreos or cheetoes, that’s where it’s at, one or two days a month. *aside>How do YOU eat an Oreo? And for me, culinary snob that I am, only Oreos will do. Not Hydrox, not those cheap knock-off Food Lion things.

I realized after a couple archive searches that this never made it over from the old site. Not sure how much good it will do now — my feeling at this point is that, if Don hasn’t been found yet, there may be no finding the guy — but I’m happy to be proven wrong. Although…it could be kind of awkward. (“So, you waited for eight years for me to show up.” “Uh huh.” “And so did some of your readers.” “Ehhhh-yep.” “That’s…quite odd.” “Yessir it is. I first started my Internet business, looking to build a blog income , while working full-time for ahuge company company. I would have liked a ’safety net’ in case the company started to downsize and make folk redundant. By starting my business parttime, I knew I was building something that I could rely on, if that situation were to occur. I was in a senior position in the company and I worked long hours. But that did not stop me putting in many hours every week to make my Internet business take off.

Yesterday was a hard day. I won’t call it a bad day, because in the end we accomplished what was necessary, but it was hard. We made some decisions yesterday, as a family, about a direction for our near future. We set out to put those decisions into action. In the process, I walked a long way in stifling heat, waited patiently for service, and explained the circumstances that led to us being there. Then I tried to ask the questions that would educate us about necessary procedures and what

What does a filmmaker with a thirst for the vampire movie do when audiences are dulled by the Twilight franchise? Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In provides an answer. This is a beautifully shot and thoughtful film that is part coming of age love story and part horror movie. The Swedish director takes aspects of the vampire legend and moves them to early 1980s Stockholm, where tower apartments are eerily lit by bright, white, virgin snow.

by Jesse Boskoff Juan Martin del Potro: Here is a player who can’t be overlooked. The young Argentine, still just 20 years old, had a tremendous hard court season in 2008, winning four straight tournaments leading up to the US Open, and 23 straight matches within that span. This is the second longest winning streak by a teenager in the Open Era, behind Rafael Nadal, who of course, won the bulk of his matches on clay. Del Potro reached the quarterfinals at least year’s open, but was stopped short by Andy Murray in a four set nailbiter.
